Our November Pro of the Month is Claude-Alain Gaillard, a mountain guide based in Dorénaz, Switzerland. He currently works as a consultant for WeMountain, an organization that offers backcountry and mountain safety courses online and in-person. Claude-Alain shares his experiences in the mountains and insights into the day-to-day of a mountain guide.

À Dorénaz. C'est un petit village proche de plusieurs stations de ski dont Verbier.
EN: WHERE ARE YOU BASED?
At Dorénaz. It's a small village near a lot of ski resorts, including Verbier.
FR: QUEL EST VOTRE TRAVAIL ET EN QUOI CONSISTE-T-IL ?
Je suis guide de montagne depuis plus de 25 ans et j'ai deux aspects dans mon travail : j'accompagne des clients et je m'occupe de la sécurisation d'événements "freeride" comme l'Xtrême de Verbier par exemple
EN: WHAT IS YOUR JOB ON THE MOUNTAIN AND WHAT DOES IT ENTAIL?
I have been a mountain guide for more than 25 years and there are 2 main aspects of my work: I accompany clients and I am in charge of safety for "freeride" events like the Verbier Extreme, for example.
FR: COMMENT AVEZ-VOUS COMMENCÉ À TRAVAILLER DANS CE DOMAINE?
J'ai toujours été attiré par la montagne et le ski. J'ai effectué une formation de Patrouilleur et également guide de montagne.
EN: HOW DID YOU START WORKING IN THIS FIELD?
I have always been drawn to the mountains and to skiing. I completed certifications to become a ski patroller as well as a mountain guide.
FR: QUELS SONT LES ASPECTS DE VOTRE TRAVAIL QUI VOUS RENDENT FIER DE TRAVAILLER DANS CE RÔLE, ET DANS CETTE INDUSTRIE ?
J'estime avoir de la chance de pouvoir évoluer dans un environment sublime et en harmonie avec la nature. Ma plus grande fierté est de pouvoir y emmener d'autres personnes et pouvoir leur faire découvrir ce jardin secret !
EN: WHAT ARE THE ASPECTS OF YOUR JOB THAT MAKE YOU PROUD TO WORK IN THIS ROLE, AND IN THIS INDUSTRY?
I consider myself lucky to be able to evolve within such a sublime environment and in harmony with nature. The thing I am the most proud of is being able to bring people into the mountains and show them this secret garden!
FR: POUVEZ-VOUS NOUS RACONTER UNE OU DEUX HISTOIRES DE MOMENTS HEUREUX OU REMARQUABLES DANS VOTRE TRAVAIL ? BONS OU MAUVAIS.
Une année, lors des préparatifs de l'Xtrême de Verbier, une immense avalanche s'est déclanchée et il y avait 2 personnes au fond de la face. On les a vues disparaitre dans le nuage de l'avalanche... et ressortir 10 secondes plus tard en Shuss. En moins de 10 secondes, j'ai eu une grande peur et une grande joie !
EN: CAN YOU TELL US ONE OR TWO STORIES ABOUT HAPPY OR NOTEWORTHY MOMENTS ON THE JOB? GOOD OR BAD.
One year, during the preparations for the Verbier Extreme, a massive avalanche was triggered and there were 2 people at the bottom of the face. We saw them disappear into the snow of the avalanche... and come back out 10 seconds later, skiing straight down in tucked position. In less than 10 seconds, I went from terrible fear to immense joy!
FR: QUEL TYPE DE SKI AIMEZ-VOUS FAIRE PENDANT VOTRE TEMPS LIBRE ET POURQUOI ?
J'aime prendre mes skis légers et étroits (90mm) afin de pouvoir aller très loin en ski de rando et pouvoir faire plusieurs sommets.
EN: WHAT KIND OF SKIING DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME AND WHY?
I love to take my light and narrow skis (90mm) so I can walk really far and be able to do several summits in a day.
FR: QUEL EST LA CHOSE QUE VOUS AIMERIEZ QUE TOUT LE MONDE SACHE SUR LA SÉCURITÉ EN MONTAGNE ?
Ne jamais penser que l'on sait tout et être toujours très sérieux dans les préparatifs et le choix du matériel.
EN: WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH EVERY KNEW ABOUT MOUNTAIN SAFETY?
Never think that you know everything and always be very serious in your preparation and in your choice of gear.
FR: QUEL CONSEIL DONNERIEZ-VOUS À QUELQU'UN QUI ENVISAGE DE S'AVENTURER DANS LE BACKCOUNTRY POUR LA PREMIÈRE FOIS ?
Il faut aller avec une personne expérimentée afin de ne pas faire des erreurs évitables. Pensez aussi à suivre des cours de formation auprès d’un organisme de formation aux avalanches tel que WeMountain.
EN: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE THINKING ABOUT HEADING INTO THE BACKCOUNTRY FOR THE FIRST TIME?
It's best to go with someone experienced so they don't make any avoidable mistakes. They should also consider taking some courses with an avalanche education practitioner such as WeMountain.

Avant d'apprendre à marcher. Avec mes parents.
EN: HOW DID YOU GET INTO SKIING?
Before I learned how to walk, with my parents.
FR: DÉCRIVEZ VOTRE JOURNÉE DE SKI IDÉALE. MATIN, APRÈS-MIDI, APRÈS, ETC.
Départ avant le lever du jour afin d'avoir un beau lever de soleil. Ski jusqu'à midi et bon repas dans la montagne. L'après-midi, préparatif de la journée suivante...
EN: DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL SKI DAY. MORNING, AFTERNOON, APRÈS, ETC.
Leave before dawn in order to have a beautiful sunrise. Ski until midday and have a nice meal on the mountain. In the afternoon, preparations for the next day...
FR: QUELS SONT LES PLUS GRANDS CHANGEMENTS QUE VOUS AVEZ VUS DANS L'INDUSTRIE DEPUIS QUE VOUS AVEZ COMMENCÉ À TRAVAILLER COMME GUIDE DE MONTAGNE ? QU'ESPÉREZ-VOUS VOIR CHANGER À L'AVENIR ?
La taille des skis, qui rend la pratique beaucoup plus amusante, ainsi que la fiabilité et la légèreté générales, qui les rendent beaucoup plus sûrs. À l'avenir, j'espère que le matériel deviendra plus durable.
EN: WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHANGES YOU HAVE SEEN IN THE INDUSTRY SINCE YOU STARTED WORKING AS A MOUNTAIN GUIDE?
The size of the skis, which makes skiing much more enjoyable, as well as the reliability and general lightness, which make them much more safe. In the future, I hope that the material will become even more durable.
