Pro of the Month: Baptiste Cibat Theil

Our May Pro of the Month is Baptiste Cibat Theil, a ski instructor and sports science student based in La Mongie, in the French Pyrenees. As a skier and instructor, Baptiste is always adapting to the rapidly changing conditions in his home resort, and he needs skis that can do the same. FR: DANS QUELLE STATION TRAVAILLES-TU ?

B: À La Mongie sur le domaine du Grand Tourmalet dans les Hautes Pyrénées en France, Pyrénées Ouest pour vous situez !

EN: WHICH SKI RESORT DO YOU WORK AT?

B: In La Mongie, which is part of the Grand Tourmalet in the Pyrenees in France.

FR: QUEL METIER EXERCES-TU ? EN QUOI CELA CONSISTE ?

B: Je suis moniteur de ski et snowboard ; j'enseigne ces disciplines à des personnes qui souhaitent apprendre ou se perfectionner, qu'elles soient débutantes ou confirmées ! C'est vraiment un super métier que j'adore ; je le fais seulement pendant les vacances scolaires pour l'instant car je suis en parallèle étudiant en STAPS, ce sont des études dans le sport !

EN: WHAT'S YOUR JOB ON THE MOUNTAIN? AND WHAT DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL?

B: I am a ski and snowboard instructor. I teach both sports to people who want to learn or improve, from the beginners to the more advanced. It’s a great job that I absolutely love! For the moment, I only get to teach during the school holidays, as I am studying sports science at university.

 

FR: POURQUOI AS-TU CHOISI CE METIER ?

B: Car le ski est ma passion, j'en fais depuis très jeune, depuis que j'ai 3 ans environ. J'adore pouvoir partager cela avec d'autres personnes et pouvoir l'enseigner !

EN: HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS PROFESSION?

B: I got into this profession because skiing is my passion, I’ve been skiing since I was about 3 years old. I love being able to teach skiing and share this passion with others!

FR: QU'EST-CE QUI TE REND FIER D'EXERCER CE METIER ET D'ETRE UN PROFESSIONNEL DE LA MONTAGNE ?

B: C'est de pouvoir travailler en montagne qui est un si bel endroit et partager le plaisir de la glisse avec différentes personnes. Je suis aussi fier de pouvoir partager des sessions avec les copains, qui eux aussi sont moniteurs de ski. C'est que du bonheur d'aller construire un kicker ensemble ou encore trouver une bonne ligne à rider.

EN: WHAT ARE THE ASPECTS OF YOUR JOB THAT MAKE YOU FEEL PROUD TO WORK IN THIS ROLE, AND IN THIS INDUSTRY?

B: Being able to work in the mountains, which is such a beautiful place to be, and to share the pleasure of riding with different people. I am also proud to be able to share riding sessions with my friends who are instructors as well. Whether we’re building a kicker or finding a great line to ride together, it’s just pure happiness.

FR: PEUX-TU PARTAGER UNE OU DEUX HISTOIRES QUI ILLUSTRENT LE BONHEUR D'EXERCER CE MÉTIER, OU DES MOMENTS MARQUANTS ?

B: J'ai eu la chance de pouvoir coacher la section "teamrider" au sein de mon école de ski ; un groupe de 5 riders qui avaient tout juste quelques années de moins que moi donc on a vraiment partagé de super moments. On s’est bien motivés tous ensemble pour apprendre de nouveaux tricks, moi y compris ! On a fait du ski sous toutes ses formes, c'est ce que j'adore et qui me plaît le plus ! Du snowpark au freeride en passant par la piste et même quelques piquets (et oui on n’y échappe pas ahah). J'ai aussi pu les sensibiliser au matériel de sécurité nécessaire lors du ski en hors-piste. D’autres moments qui illustrent le bonheur d'exercer ce métier sont les descentes aux flambeaux où l'ensemble des moniteurs se suivent en ski depuis le haut de la station avec une torche en feu à la main lorsqu’il fait nuit. C’est un beau spectacle dans toute la station et c’est un bon moment pour nous les moniteurs. La tradition veut que tous les spectateurs sortent sur leurs balcons et font du bruit avec leurs casseroles.

EN: DO YOU HAVE ONE OR TWO SHORT STORIES TO DEMONSTRATE HAPPY OR NOTEWORTHY MOMENTS ON THE JOB?

B: I was lucky enough to coach the “teamrider” program at my ski school; a group of 5 riders who were just a few years younger than me, so we really got to share great moments together. We all motivated each other to learn new tricks, me included! We did all sorts of skiing together, which is what I love the most! From riding the snow park, to freeriding, cruising the pistes, and even some skiing some gates (yep, couldn’t avoid them haha). I also got to teach them about avalanche safety and the necessary equipment for off-piste skiing. Another awesome experience in this job is the torchlit descent, when all the instructors ski down the mountain following each other with a flaming torch at night. It’s a great show throughout the resort and a great moment for us instructors. It’s tradition for all the spectators to cheer from their balconies and bang their pots and pans together!

FR: QUELS SKIS UTILISES-TU AU TRAVAIL ?

B: Les Prodigy 2.0 qui sont de bons skis à tout faire pour rider toute la montagne !

EN: WHAT DO YOU SKI ON AT WORK?

B: The Prodigy 2.0, which can do anything, anywhere on the mountain! 

 

FR: ET SUR TON TEMPS LIBRE ?

B: Dictator 3.0 pour une pratique plus freeride et pour pouvoir envoyer dans toutes les conditions, et toujours mes Prodigy 2.0. 

EN: WHAT DO YOU SKI ON "AT PLAY"?

B: The Dictator 3.0 for freeriding and sending it in all conditions. I also use the Prodigy 2.0 in my free time as well.

FR: QUEL GENRE DE SKI PRATIQUES-TU PENDANT TON TEMPS LIBRE ?

B: Cela dépend des conditions, si je peux aller en hors-piste et me faire plaisir en freeride je vais faire ça sinon je peux passer une journée à tourner sur le snowpark ou faire une ligne avec plusieurs kickers. Je m'adapte en fonction des conditions, dans les Pyrénées on est bien obligé car les conditions changent vite. Cette année, j'ai dû changer mes habitudes et faire essentiellement du ski de randonnée, il fallait mériter ses virages !

EN: WHAT KIND OF SKIING DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

B: It depends on the conditions. If I can go off-piste and freeride, that’s what I’ll aim for, otherwise I can spend the whole day in the park or lapping the same line with various kickers and side hits. I adapt my skiing to the conditions; you have to be adaptable in the Pyrenees where the conditions change very quickly. This year, I had to change my habits and mostly ski-toured; you had to earn your turns!

FR: QUEL METIER EXERCES-TU HORS SAISON ?

B: Je suis étudiant le reste du temps en STAPS, ce sont des études dans le sport ; je me spécialise dans le Handicap et le Sport Santé. Sinon l'été je travaille comme animateur dans un centre de loisirs !

EN: WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK DURING THE OFF-SEASON?

B: I am still studying; I study sports science, with a specialization in disability and health-related sports. In the summer, I work as a leader at a recreation center!

FR: POUR FINIR, QUELS AUTRES SPORTS PRATIQUES-TU EN ETE ?

B: Je fais pas mal de surf l'été mais aussi un peu de skate (avec un deck Faction bien sûr), du VTT et bientôt du parapente !

EN: LASTLY, WHAT SUMMER SPORTS ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT?

B:I surf quite a lot, I also skate (with a Faction deck of course), mountain bike and soon I’ll be paragliding!
