For our March edition of Pro of the Month, we’re catching up with Cedric Faudot. A former ski patroller with 10 years of experience, Cedric now works year-round as an Outdoor Guide, spending every day in the mountains. A big fan of skiing, nature, human-powered adventures to far-flung places and outdoor sports of all kinds, Cedric gives us the lowdown on his job, his standout memories and his ideal setup for work and the down days. 

FR: QUEL METIER EXERCES-TU ? EN QUOI CELA CONSISTE ?

C: J'ai été Pisteur Secouriste (2e degré, artificier) pendant 10 ans. Ce métier passion permet d'être en montagne tout l'hiver. Le travail consiste à sécuriser le domaine skiable, ouvrir et fermer les pistes, informer, conseiller les skieurs et intervenir en cas de secours. L'été je travaille en tant que guide outdoor au sein du bureau NOA Guides. Je suis moniteur spéléo, canyoning, VTT, escalade et accompagnateur en montagne. Depuis 2 ans, j'ai arrêté de travailler comme pisteur secouriste les hivers pour être guide à l’année. Je profite donc encore plus à fond de pouvoir skier pour moi avec ma copine ou mes amis et de pouvoir profiter un maximum de l'hiver et du ski sous toutes ses formes !

EN: What's your job on the mountain? And what does your job entail?

C: I was a ski patroller for 10 years. It’s a passion as well as a job, which allows you to be in the mountains all winter. The job involves securing the resort, opening and closing the pistes, informing and advising skiers and responding to accidents and emergency situations. In the summer, I work as an outdoor guide with NOA Guides where I’m a caving, canyoning, mountain biking and climbing instructor. I stopped working as a patroller 2 years ago to guide all year long. This means I can make the most of skiing all winter long in every type of terrain and conditions, for myself, with my girlfriend or with my friends!

 

FR: POURQUOI AS-TU CHOISI CE METIER ?

C: J'exerce ces métiers par passion pour la montagne et les sports de plein air, notamment le ski ! J'aime pouvoir partager ces moments avec mes amis ou en encadrant des gens qui ne sont pas toujours initiés et qui viennent découvrir le milieu montagnard. Le plaisir d'être en montagne est indescriptible et permet d'être loin de l'agitation de la vallée.

EN: How did you get into this profession?

C: I’m doing this job because I’m passionate about the mountains and outdoor sports, especially skiing! I like being able to share these moments with my friends or with skiers I’m guiding, who aren’t always used to being in the mountains and who come to discover a new environment. It’s hard to describe the pleasure of being in the mountains and far away from the hustle and bustle of life in the valley.

FR: QU'EST-CE QUI TE REND FIER D'EXERCER CE METIER ET D'ETRE UN PROFESSIONNEL DE LA MONTAGNE ?

C: Être en montagne tous les jours est un plaisir et je suis fier de pouvoir transmettre mes connaissances, les valeurs d'entraide et solidarité montagnarde et de pouvoir faire partager de belles aventures à mes clients mais aussi entre amis ! C'est une passion pour le milieu montagnard qui est devenu un job. Ce n'est pas commun et je suis fier de représenter cette corporation tout en échangeant avec les gens.

EN: What are the aspects of your job that make you feel proud to work in this role, and in this industry?

C: Being in the mountains everyday is a pleasure. I am proud to be able to pass on my knowledge and the values of helping one another and showing solidarity within the mountain community. I also love sharing amazing experiences with my clients or with my friends! It’s a passion that has turned into a profession. It’s not that common and I’m proud to be a member of this collective of mountain professionals.

FR: Peux-tu partager une ou deux histoires qui illustrent le bonheur d'exercer ce métier, ou des moments marquants ?

C: La dernière expérience a été 4 jours de ski de randonnée en itinérance en Suisse entre La Fouly et Champex. Belle aventure humaine à 4 personnes en autonomie car les refuges n'étaient pas gardés ! Une expérience hors du temps et magique ! Et un test grandeur nature pour mes Agent 2.0 ! J'aime voyager et faire des rencontres. Ma passion pour le ski m'a permis de parcourir de nombreuses montagnes en France, Suisse, Italie... mais aussi au Japon et en Sibérie ! Cette expérience avec des amis était une des plus belles expériences humaines et de ski que j'ai vécues. Nous sommes allés skier à Mamay au sud du Lac Baïkal en logeant dans une cabane au milieu des bois. Pas une remontée mécanique, des fats au pied, des belles montagnes, une neige exceptionnelle, une bonne bande de potes et ... des bières ! Le top quoi !!

EN: Do you have one or two short stories to demonstrate happy or noteworthy moments on the job?

C: I recently went on a 4-day ski tour in Switzerland between La Fouly and Champex. It was an amazing, human-powered adventure; just our group of 4 skiers completely alone and independent, as the huts we stayed in were not manned. It was a timeless and magical experience - and a full-scale test for my Agent 2.0! I also like to travel and meet new people. My passion for skiing has allowed me to discover so many mountains; in France, Switzerland, Italy… but also in Japan and Siberia! The trip to Siberia has been one of my best life experiences to date. We went ski touring in Mamay Valley, south of Lake Baikal, and stayed in a hut in the woods. Absolutely no lifts; only fat skis, beautiful mountains, amazing snow, an awesome group of friends and… beers! What more could you ask for?

FR: QUELS SKIS UTILISES-TU AU TRAVAIL ?

C: Agent 2.0 !

EN: What do you ski on at work?

C: Agent 2.0!

 

FR: ET SUR TON TEMPS LIBRE ?

C: Agent 2.0 et Agent 3.0 montés en rando avec des fixations PLUM.

EN: What do you ski on "at play"?

C: Agent 2.0 and Agent 3.0 mounted with PLUM bindings.

FR: QUEL GENRE DE SKI PRATIQUES-TU PENDANT TON TEMPS LIBRE ?

C: Un peu de ski en station (en alpin ou télémark) mais de moins en moins souvent car je préfère aller en randonnée faire du ski sauvage loin du monde et des stations.

EN: What kind of skiing do you do in your free time?

C: I do a bit of resort skiing and telemarking, but less and less these days, as I prefer to go touring to get away from the crowds and resorts.

FR: QUEL METIER EXERCES-TU HORS SAISON ?

C: Guide outdoor : moniteur spéléo, canyoning, VTT, escalade et accompagnateur en montagne.

EN: What do you do for work during the off-season?

C: I’m an outdoor guide: caving, canyoning, mountain biking, and mountain guide.

FR: POUR FINIR, QUELS AUTRES SPORTS PRATIQUES-TU EN ETE ?

C: VTT, escalade, canyoning, spéléo, trail mais j'aime aussi me poser dans un hamac avec un bon bouquin ou boire une bière au coin du feu avec les copains !

EN: Lastly, what summer sports are you passionate about?

C: Mountain biking, climbing, caving, trail running, but I also enjoy relaxing in a hammock with a nice book and drinking a beer by the fire with friends!
